The Samuel Hines 2004 Youth Basketball Camp
Samuel Hines grew up in Wilson, North Carolina and graduated from
Fike High School where he played basketball under the coaching of the late Harvey Reid.
Samuel earned a basketball scholarship to the University of South Alabama and has played
professional basketball for ten years in various countries, including, Mexico, Venezuela,
Argentina, Poland, Cyprus, and France. Currently, Samuel is playing basketball in the
first division in Cantu, Italy.
During the summer of 2000, Samuel returned to Wilson and held his
first girls' and boys' basketball camp at Reid Street Community Center. Since the camp's
inception, Samuel has shared his life experiences with camp participants, emphasizing the
importance of hard work, education, diligence and Christian morals while also providing
instruction on the fundamental skills of basketball. In addition to sharing his own
experiences, Samuel was blessed to have a variety of professionals to support his efforts
by providing guidance and inspiration to campers. Specifically, the camp participants had
the opportunity to dialogue with lawyers, correctional officers, social workers, educators,
professional athletes, members of the clergy and many others. Applying the skills and
lessons learned through basketball, Samuel's vision is to encourage students to continue
their education and to assist them in developing a Christian foundation on which they can
rely to cope with life's obstacles.
With such high aspirations, Samuel cannot do it alone. He will need
the support of the community. He has already solicited the assistance of many of his
professional colleagues to help him in this effort.
In recognition of Samuel's belief in the importance of education,
The Samuel Hines Youth Basketball Camp will award one or more academic scholarships to
deserving participants who attained at least a 3.0 grade point average at the end of the
school year. Depending upon how much money is raised from sponsors, the money will be
placed in a CD and given to the scholarship recipient(s) when he/she is ready for college.
The scholarship(s) will be awarded in memory of Samuel's father, Bobby G. Hines, who
inspired him to achieve success.
